There are a number of reasons you might want to learn self-defence. The most obvious reason is that you want to be prepared to defend yourself or your family if you’re ever in immediate danger.

It is very rare to run into someone who may want to cause you harm. Having no plan for how to deal with that situation leaves you exceptionally vulnerable. A study conducted by the Department of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that 1 in 6 women had experienced a sexual assault or an attempted sexual assault.

For men, the numbers were 1 in 33. No attack is ever the victim’s fault and not all attacks are preventable. But we do know that learning the art of self-defence can help victims to stop or escape their attackers.

Rape is only one of the situations where someone would need self-defence training. A mugging or home invasion are both situations where self-defence training would help you to better tackle the danger, defend yourself and your family, and find ways to minimize the damage the perpetrator poses.

Self-defence is about learning how to defend yourself and think clearly in very intense situations. It is about gaining the confidence to better control situations which might otherwise be completely outside of your control.

  • Social skills: Self-defense helps to develop your social skills. Self-defence is somewhat similar to martial arts. As it teaches the discipline of honouring your elders, showing respect, and the tolerance of others. Thus by developing these social skills, you would bring about a positive outlook for your own point of view. Additionally, also help to bring peace and balance in your attitude.

Disadvantages

As we know that every advantage has its disadvantage – self-defence could bring some grave consequences if not taught correctly. Here are some scenarios that could go wrong:

  • It could lure children into a false sense of security. Now as we know self-defence does teach children how to defend themselves. A few of the children might overestimate their own strength and get themselves into dangerous situations.
  • Children can become violent with other children. The defensive moves a child learns as self-defence skills could easily turn into offensive moves. Children often lack judgment about when to apply their learned skills.
  • Telling kids that there exist people in this world that can cause them to harm in more than one way could instil “stranger danger” so far into kids that they’re terrified to talk to people around them or for that matter anyone. They may not prefer to go out in the public as well. Again, the quality of instruction is paramount here and could instil fear in kids and not confidence.

Final Words

To protect ourselves from being harmed, injured or killed is a basic right of every human being. Thus instead of becoming vulnerable and helpless, wise people learn the tactics and defend themselves. So it becomes very important for us to learn self-defence.
